This year in May I made a commitment to take my freelance career to the next level by writing new content here on my blog once every week. Doing this has done leaps and bounds for my site’s traffic, online presence and self-satisfaction.
I’ve more than doubled in Twitter followers, tripled in Facebook likes, grew my first mailing list, and it’s all because of my writing. I have to give a huge shout out to Preston D Lee, founder of Graphic Design Blender, for giving me the opportunity to also write there, which really kick started this whole thing.
I know I can improve though. I feel like my content strategy here isn’t as effective as it could be, so I’m making some major changes around my own freelance career, and that’s what I’m sharing with you now.
Refocusing my content for the right audience
If you take a look at my website, it’s clean, the content is well-written and it holds all of the necessary information for my visitors.
So where’s this major flaw that I’m just now noticing?!
I’m attracting the wrong audience.
It’s obvious that my content is geared to freelancers like myself, and I love sharing my experiences and insight on the subject.
I’m so pleased with the page views I’m getting. My blog has grown dramatically over the past couple of months, but the truth is, I’ve put myself in a terrible situation…
If a freelancer stumbles across my blog, they’d love it. But if a client stumbled on it, they’d be like, “I’m not a freelance graphic designer. Next…”
My content is repelling potential clients, and attracting competition!
This is where I need to refocus my content strategy, and it’s going to be a massive change for me.
But don’t worry! This change is going to be awesome for everyone! For you (other freelancers), potential clients and myself.
Taking my content strategy to the next level
Over the next couple of months here’s what’s going to happen: My blog and it’s posts will still be here, along with myself.
My new content strategy for my personal blog will still have general updates on my freelance career, but majority of the new content will be geared towards client related topics. Topics that will educate and provide solutions for clients.
Ultimately my goal with this change is to reach out to my ideal customers. Making connections with other freelancers makes me feel great, but sales from clients is what helps me live great.
So here’s the real major change that’s happening…
There’s no way I’m leaving my current readers behind, so with this new content strategy for my personal blog, I need a new home for my freelance audience.
